Simple Tips to Hang Art Correctly

May 3, 2022

Mastering a few simple tips for hanging art correctly can elevate the ambiance of your home to a sophisticated level. Selecting the right art pieces might seem challenging amidst numerous beautiful options, but let’s simplify the process to ensure your displayed pieces enhance your wall design flawlessly.

Scale

Consider the scale of your space and opt for larger artworks that fill the available area. If positioning art above a sofa or table, aim for a piece that spans approximately two-thirds the width of the furniture.

Hanging

In general, artwork should be at eye level. When hanging a single piece, its center should ideally be about 60 inches from the floor. The same rule applies to groups of art. Whether it’s two, three, or four pieces, treat them as one unit, hanging them approximately 60 inches from the floor to the center of the grouping. Always adapt to your space and preferences.

When placing artwork above a sofa or table, maintain a distance of about 5-7 inches between the bottom of the art and the furniture. This guideline also applies when hanging a mirror.

Gallery

Gallery walls offer an engaging way to showcase multiple pieces of artwork. To achieve a cohesive look, consider using consistent frames and spacing in a grid-like pattern. Choose prints or photos with a similar theme, such as black and white, botanicals, or sketches.

Maintain a sense of cohesion between groups by spacing artwork a few inches apart—around 2 inches for smaller pieces and 3 inches for larger artworks.

For a more eclectic design featuring mixed artwork, experiment with different frames and materials. Combining brass with natural woods and black frames can create a timeless look.

Artwork adds a personal touch to a home, fostering conversations and elevating the overall design. Mix various sizes and designs when hanging art—consider a couple of large statement pieces, a few areas with two or three stacked pieces, and perhaps one or two gallery walls. Typically, I recommend only one visible gallery wall in a space. Incorporating different art pieces and sizes will infuse charm and interest into your home.
